National Gallery of Art: one of the finest art collections in the world

Masterpieces and more masterpieces: the National Gallery of Art in Washington contains thousands. Go contemplate : they are beautiful.

Many donors have bequeathed their finest paintings and sculptures to this museum. The west wing, inaugurated in 1941 by President Roosevelt, presents works dating up to the 19th century. There are wonders of Italian, Flemish, and French art, in particular four Vermeers, plus masterpieces by Giotto, Botticelli, Raphael, Goya, and Fragonard.

The Impressionists are in galleries 80 to 93. The west wing is connected to the east wing, designed by architect IM Pei (of Louvre Pyramid fame) by an underground hall. Opened in 1978, the east wing houses modern and contemporary works, including a Calder mobile in the atrium, and, upstairs, paintings by Matisse, Kandinsky, Mondrian, and many others.

Free jazz concerts are held in the small sculpture garden every Friday night during the warmer months.
