Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga: the most interesting classical Portuguese art museum

One of the most famous museums in Lisbon, as much for its size as the quality of its collections.

In the beautiful district of Lapa, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga is installed inside a 17th century palace that belonged to the Pombal family, until its transformation into a museum in the 1880s. As richly endowed with paintings as religious and decorative arts, it magnificently lays out the milestones of Portuguese art.

Besides a rich collection of Portuguese and Flemish primitives, a section is devoted to 15th to 19th century furniture and the masterworks of Portuguese medieval and Baroque goldsmiths. The famous polyptych The Adoration of St. Vincent painted by Nuno Gonçalves between 1460 and 1470 is just one of the masterpieces on display, and it is considered to be on par with The Temptation of St. Anthony by Hieronymus Bosch.
