Modern art at the Stedelijk Museum

museum

Kasimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso… they're all here.

This museum brings together one of the Netherlands' best collections of modern and contemporary art. The neo-Renaissance building, built in 1895, was renovated and enlarged in 2012. Drawing on its remarkable store of paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, and photographs, the museum principally highlights artistic movements of the latter half of the 20th century, such as the CoBrA movement, New Realism, and Pop Art.

Don't miss works by Karel Appel, Jean Dubuffet, and Wassily Kandinsky. A large section is devoted to the paintings of Russian painter Kasimir Malevich. Pushing abstraction to its furthest extreme, he painted the untitled white square on a white background in 1915.

You will also find works by post-war American artists such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein. Contemporary exhibits dedicated to young artists of the Dutch artistic scene complete the ensemble.
