From Cusco, you can reach this fabulous lost city, overlooking the eastern slopes of the Central Andes, by train or the Inca Trail. Abandoned at the collapse of the Inca empire, the Sacred City, forgotten for centuries, is a sanctuary and an archaeological site of the highest order.
At its peak, Machu Picchu was probably the most amazing urban creation of the modern New World. The site was divided into two distinct areas. The agricultural zone is recognisable by its characteristic terraces, suitable for crops and endowed with an ingenious rainwater drainage system.
The urban area was organised around a main square, which housed the people, the residence of the Emperor, the sacrificial altars, and the famous Sun Temple. Stairways offered access to areas reserved for the nobility, priests, and merchants.
