Nestled amidst a dense tropical forest, near the Usumacinta River, Palenque is one of the most beautiful Mayan cities of Mexico. Palenque, which means ‘surrounded by trees,' is one of those timeless places where one wanders through the jungle, past gorgeous waterfalls, while following one of the many trails, some of which take you to moss-covered temples lost in the fog.
Discovered in the late 18th century, the site is still being explored and reconstructed. The ruins have not yet revealed all their treasure, as only 10% of the site has been uncovered. This mysterious, enchanted site is one of the best examples of the stone and stucco achievements of Mayan pyramid architecture and statuary. Among the many buildings, the most interesting is the Temple of the Inscriptions, a stunning nine-storey pyramid that contains the sarcophagus of King Pakal.
