La Scala: what a scene!

art & culture

‘Norma', ‘Otello', ‘Aida'… the walls of the world's most famous opera house have vibrated with the most beautiful of Italian operas. Thank you Bellini, Rossini, Verdi…

Did you know that La Scala was built at the request of Maria Theresa of Austria, Queen of France? It was built where once stood the church of Santa Maria della Scala whose name Maria Theresa took.

Since then, La Scala has become synonymous with Italian opera. It is the most famous of operatic stages, and it still resonates with the golden voice of the diva, Maria Callas. Half of its repertoire is dedicated to Italian scores, and the other half to French, German, and Russian composers, as well as their theatre directors and orchestra conductors.

Robert Wilson and Deborah Warner are just some of the names that have boosted La Scala's international reputation, which is always on the lookout for emerging talent.
