La Renaissance Jaragua Hotel & Casino: favourite of night owls

night life

If most hotels in the capital have a club and a casino, the bar of the Jaragua deserves a detour for its party atmosphere, shows, and musicians.

On the Malecon, the promenade on the seaside, the massive silhouette of the Jaragua stands out. A rallying point for nights on the town, the thriving scene here competes head-on with the neon lights of Las Vegas. In 1990, the bar proudly entered into the history of cinema when it served as the main backdrop for Robert Redford during the filming of Havana, directed by Sydney Pollack.

The highlight is weekend evenings, which attract regulars in gala dress, with white suits and panama hats. And, as music and dance go hand in hand in the lives of Dominicans, come for the waltz, merengue, and bachata. On stage, you may see a big band playing updated swing music, popular in the 1940s, with sax, trumpet, and trombone out in force; it's a real treat for fans of Glenn Miller and Count Basie's music, spiced up with a little tropical sauce.
