La Colombe is a restaurant up to its neck in awards, so remember to book well in advance. Of course, the main reason to make sure you plan ahead lies in the outstanding cuisine of Scot Kirton. The chef creates pure gold on the plate, full of sweet surprises. The fish amuse-bouche is presented in a pretty tin of tuna. When you open it you'll see the tantalising tuna preparation with Asian influences that will delight your palate.
Then on to Angus beef tataki with aubergine, chipotle, avocado, quail egg, and daikon radish, followed by the langoustine salad with miso and orange mayonnaise, sweet potato, mustard and yuzu. Watermelon and elderberries serve as palate cleansers before the miso-seared scallops and Asian-style pork belly. Several vegetarian menus are also available. Herbs come directly from the establishment's small vegetable garden.
Another reason to come: the restaurant has the feel of a private balcony overlooking the lush Constantia Valley of Hout Bay. Resembling a contemporary lodge dressed in white and grey, La Colombe is exceptionally beautiful. And what about the service? It's as perfect as the food and as lovely as the view. No wonder Kirton won Chef of the Year in 2015; he's got it all.
