Khao Phansa

Published on 06-07-2016

The Buddhist equivalent of the beginning of Lent, Khao Phansa is a ‘Candle Festival' that calls everyone to meditation.

On the first day of the Buddhist Rains Retreat (Vassa)—the first day of the three-month period during which monks stop travelling in order to meditate in temples—practicing Buddhists and tourists in Bangkok are cordially invited to join this ‘Festival of Candles'.

Superb sculptures are produced in wax and then paraded on carts throughout the city to honour the three jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, his teachings—the Dharma—and the community of his disciples, who form the Sangha.
