Ipanema Beach: party in the sand!

A more than three-kilometer stretch of fine sand, Ipanema Beach has more cult status than its neighbor, Copacabana, thanks, of course, to its cult song, ‘The Girl from Ipanema', and the fact that the cult of the body dominates here like nowhere else.

This has always been true: the bronzed beauties of Rio's gilded youth, straight and gay, prefer this beach to all others. Favela kings hang out at Posto 8, surfers at Arpoador, andIpanema gets crowded on weekends, with its volleyball and futevôlei (foot volleyball) matches. Best to get up early to enjoy the spectacle of the mountain view of DoisIrmãos ‘two brothers', because of its split peak. Later in the day, the spectacular sunsets are a knockout.

Lounge chairs and parasols can be rented in the barraca of your choice, where you can order your água de coco, a caipirinha aperitif, mate, or globos shrimp crisps that look (and taste) like polystyrene…
