If ancient Rome promised panem circenses (bread and circuses), Il Goccetto, an Italian wine cellar in the historic centre, promises vino e olio (wine and oil). This fabulous enoteca lends proof to the idea that pleasure is the heart of the Roman philosophy. And most importantly, that wine is a pillar of Italian heritage, one of the treasures of this land.
In addition to its sunshine and its ideal topography, the multiple influences which, since ancient times, have shaped Italy are also responsible for a range of incredibly rich native grape varieties, including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Primitivo, and Tocai Friulano. Il Goccetto, housed in the walls of the Renaissance palace of the Bishop of Cervia, is a temple to these grapes, where disciples gather to sacrifice on its wooden altar a few bottles, selected from among the 800 types of wine that it stocks. What will bewitch you the most? The gruff Piedmont? Refined Tuscan? Or the sunny wines of Sicily? At Il Goccetto, the whole of Italy is contained in its bottles.
