Hotel Empress Zoe: a quaint secret garden

A short walk from the Blue Mosque or Topkapi Palace will bring you to this charming place, which offers 25 rooms in three old houses.

In the tourist district of Sultanahmet, the Empress Zoe is a pioneer, with its traditional houses converted into a quaint hotel. The wooden and brick structures backed onto Byzantine ramparts now gather around a lovely garden where cats come and go in peace. This is the best place to have breakfast and feel the vibrations of the city. Unless your lucky enough to have a room with its own terrace.

The 25 rooms are all different sizes and tastefully decorated in Ottoman style, with terracotta tiles on the floor, traditional kilims, tapestries, and frescos. Some have alcoves. A bar located on the roof terrace offers panoramic views of the Hagia Sophia, the mouth of the Bosphorus, and the Marmara Sea. Absolutely magical.
