Hofburg: The Imperial Palace in the footsteps of the Habsburgs

The Hofburg is composed of a set of buildings with magnificent architecture that comprises a city unto itself.

For six centuries the Hofburg was the seat of power. The winter residence of the Habsburgs has over 2,600 rooms and 18 wings. Enlarged and rebuilt over the ages, it has Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical influences.

If you're short on time, stick to visiting the 20 rooms of the royal apartments. Starting in the footsteps of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, the beautiful Sissi, visit the dining room, smoking room, the courtroom, and the great salon where a stately portrait of the Empress painted by Winterhalter hangs.

It was in his study that Franz Joseph learned of the death of his son Rodolphe. Classical concerts waltzes and Mozart operas in particular are given between May and December.
