Located in Riviera Maya, about 60 kilometres south of Cancun International Airport and six kilometres from Playa del Carmen, Xcaret offers entertainment for all. It is an amusement park, nature reserve, and archaeological site all rolled into one, and it is impossible to do everything in one day.
Guests can swim with dolphins, purify body and mind through the Mayan sweat-lodge ritual of temazcal, feed sharks in the Caribbean Sea, discover 20 different butterfly species, some of which are endangered, and even visit vestiges of Mayan civilisation. These buildings were once part of a port and a ceremonial centre where Mayans used to come together and bathe to purify themselves. The most famous attraction in the park is the underground river. Swim in an 800 metre-long river of crystal clear water through caves encrusted with marine fossils and stalactite formations.
Stay after sundown to enjoy the incredible night show, with its traditional Mexican dances. If you are near here during the Halloween period, come for the Day of the Dead festivities.
