Getty Center: a concentration of culture

museum

In the Brentwood hills, one of the largest cultural complexes in the world can be seen and admired for kilometres around.

Inaugurated 20 years after the death of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty, this museum is the work of architect Richard Meier.

Anchored to an anti-seismic foundation, the Getty Center is an innovative cultural and scientific campus, and the home of incredible art collections belonging to the J. Paul Getty Museum. With an annual budget of 100 million USD, the Getty Center has an aggressive acquisitions policy. Ensconced in 45 hectares of landscaped gardens, five pavilions bathed in natural light hold a remarkable number of European artworks.

Besides sculptures and paintings from the classical period, the museum has a multitude of drawings and manuscripts, decorative objects and ceramics. Out of respect for the patron's wishes, the Getty Center collection does not include any 20th and 21st century art, with the exception of photography.
