Explore Akumal, turtle country

visit

Twenty kilometres from Tulum, Akumal is a divine hideaway on the Yucatan Peninsula.

Meaning ‘place of the turtles' in ancient Mayan, the small town of Akumal is transformed every May when turtles come in from the coast to spawn.

Throughout the year, Akumal is a diving town, where people come to explore the seabed and its incredible caves and canyon that form a veritable underwater mountain landscape. Its coral reefs are home to a wide variety of marine species that swim fearlessly with divers. You can rent a sea kayak or go snorkelling amongst stingrays, turtles, and many species of colourful fish.

The nearby Aktun-Chen Natural Park is renowned for its lush landscapes and rich wildlife. You will come across monkeys, spiders, and snakes in their natural environment. During your visit, be sure to go for a dip in the cool waters of its sublime cenote (a natural water-filled pit).
