Espacio de Arte Contemporaneo : an unusual setting for contemporary art

A new space in an old prison finally offers the city the contemporary art centre it deserves.

It's impossible not to speak of this new space for contemporary art. From 1888-1990, the Miguelete Prison was the main penitentiary in the country, before beingconverted in the 1980's into a juvenile offenders institution. For its new director, Fernando Sicco, nothing could be more symbolic than its transformation from a place for the deprivation of liberty into a place of creativity. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture, the building now houses a museum of contemporary art with exhibitions of paintings, photographs, sculptures, and videos by local and international artists. The exhibitions are adapted to the space, so, for example, cells or patios still charged with their prison history are used to display the art. Not to be missed.
