In the Friedrichshain district, the East Side Gallery is a 1.3-kilometre-long piece of the Berlin Wall covered with street art and frescoes. Classified in 1992 as a historical monument, it is one of the largest portions of the wall that was not destroyed in 1989.

Since January 1990, 118 artists from 21 different countries have come and decorated it by brush and spray can, often with messages about the division and reunification of Germany, but more often on the themes of freedom and love. Unfortunately, the drawings degrade over time and the wall is crumbling. Near the Ostbahn of train station, 40 drawings were renovated in 2009 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall.

Today, the artists behind the East Side Gallery have mounted an association to raise funds, and other renovation projects are underway.
