Contemporary art retrospective at Château Lynch-Bages

Published on 06-13-2016 Agenda

This retrospective highlights fourteen artists, from Pierre Alechinsky to Jean Le Gac and James Brown. You will also become attached to the fabulous vat-house they are showcased in.

Château Lynch-Bages overlooks one hundred hectares of gravelly soil from the Garonne, at the heart of the Pauillac designation. Its hills give the Cabernet-Sauvignon its body, complexity and rich aromas, subdued with the Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties. For the past 27 years, this First Growth wine doubled with another tannic frame of deep colours: contemporary art.

Since 1989, Jean-Michel Cazes, owner of the vineyard and art collector, assisted by the Lelong gallery in Paris, asks a different artist each year to create a wine-inspired artwork for Lynch-Bages. Just like wine aged in casks, the collection has gathered momentum with passing years. It is now exhibited on the limewashed walls of the old vat-house, another extraordinary point of interest, as it was built by Skawinski around 1850.
