The Colchagua Valley, around the sleepy town of Santa Cruz, alone produces 13 of the most prestigious wines of Chile. Its bucolic route winds through the Chilean countryside and vineyards, where the Jesuits planted the first vines in the 16th century.
Among the domains and bodegas open to the public, you have the choice between ViuManent, Las Niñas, Casa Lapostolle, Casa Silva, and others. The tastings feature the famous full-bodied red Chilean wines made primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, and Syrah. In the tasting room, your guide will reveal the specifics of Chilean production that enabled the Colchagua Valley to be ranked as the best wine region in the world in 2005.
On the way back, the Colchagua Museum is worth a detour for its treasures of pre-Columbian ceramics and antique winemaking tools.
