Karl Lagerfeld is the best-known Hamburger, but the designer Jil Sander has also registered her eponymous brand internationally. The Schanze district may be the home of the Montblanc pen, but Hamburg is also the place where Closed fashion grew up. Founded in 1978 in Italy and now based in Eppendorf, an upscale neighbourhood with expensive homes, it embodies the local spirit: chic but casual.
The clothes, often coloured, accompany all aspects of local daily life, including the inevitable walk with the dog around the Alster (you rarely see so many canine species in a city). After falling for their jeans for men or women, make a detour to the Galerie Commeter, which presents modern and contemporary art—and has done so since 1821! The gallery had a little sister in 2008, Persiehl & Heine, specialising in photo art, where the photographs of, among others, Sarah Moon have already been shown.
