Climbing the Rhune

sport and wellness

From the top you can enjoy a 360° view of the Pyrenees and the French and Spanish coasts.

Less than an hour from Biarritz, the Rhune rises to 905 meters above sea level. For lovers of walks and hikes, it has many marked trails, suitable for all levels.

Depending on which trail you take, hikes to the summit take approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Hiking trails hug the coast, allowing one to discover the coastline from a completely different perspective. Strange encounters are common: pottoks, the small, wild ponies of the Basque region, but also vultures and manech, the black-headed sheep of the region.

On the way back, stop at the Yasola yenta, a traditional Basque mountain inn, for plates of raw vegetables, omelettes, and patxaran liquor, all for about €20.

Those feeling less athletic can get to the top by taking the little train from Sare. It climbs through the wilderness, offering glorious views along the way, and reaches the summit in 35 minutes.
