Lost in a maze of alleys in a working class neighbourhood in the former French concession, there is a place that sells handcrafted items in a beautiful raw cotton fabric in Nanjing blue.
The traditional method of manufacture, which dates back more than 300 years, is to first cut out the oiled, stencilled patterns which are then affixed to the fabric. A soybean paste is applied to the fabric, which is then immersed in a blue dye obtained from indigo leaves. After completion of the dyeing, the fabric is allowed to dry before the soybean paste is removed with a knife revealing a blue and white pattern.
Here, you will find hammocks, umbrellas, slippers, toys, and tablecloths in the most varied patterns. In short, very tasteful gifts to bring back from your trip to Shanghai.
