Cannes: the city of festivals

art & culture

In visiting the alleys of the old town of Cannes, one is reminded that Nice is not the only jewel of the French Riviera.

The palm-lined port of Cannes has lost none of its Mediterranean charm. For those who love Nice's‘Promenade des Anglais', a stroll along Cannes'‘Croisette', which runs along the seafront, is a must. The famous red carpet of the ‘Palais des Festivals', home to the Cannes Film Festival, needs no introduction. On the left, as you go east, stands a perfect row of palaces adorned like carnival floats. The elegant hotels, jewellery stores, and shops shine brightly night and day. Take an afternoon pause with a fruity cocktail in the shade, without leaving the attendant sea breeze, under the umbrella-shaped parasols of the Carlton Bar. Alternatively, climb the narrow streets that wind up to the top of ‘Le Suquet', the authentic cradle of the city. The summer seems longer and cooler in the shade of the great plane trees that line the gardens. Film buffs will appreciate the film frescoes that enliven the lemony facades of Cannes and awaken fantasies just like the movies themselves do!
