Café Pushkin with Nathalie, my guide

If it weren't for Gilbert Bécault's worldwide hit, ‘Nathalie', this legendary and unmissable Moscow restaurant would have never existed. It is a reflection of Russian cuisine of the 18th century.

Little Russian patés, home-made pelminis (Siberian dumplings), beef stroganoff and the ‘Pozharsky' veal chop all these recipes from the inspired cookbooks of the tsars are on the menu at the famous Café Pushkin. Founded in 1999, Café Pushkin is the brainchild of Andrei Delos (painter, art restorer, engineer, nightclub impresario…), who opened it to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of the beloved poet, playwright, and Russian novelist.

As Gilbert Bécault's 1966 hit‘ Nathalie' goes: ‘I was thinking, after Lenin's tomb, we could go to Café Pushkin…'.  When the song came out it was only an imaginary place. Now, under these stylish French ceilings and amongst the warm wood panelling, every woman is ‘Nathalie, my guide' or Princess Ludmila from Pushkin's 1820 poem ‘Ruslan and Ludmila'. Come here to drink chocolate during the day,have a little dinner and a tête à tête in the evening, downstairs with candles, or upstairs in the library, and choose from the tremendously French and somewhat costly menu of Chef Andrei Makhov.
