Inaugurated in 2009 on two floors in a former industrial furniture building, the 1,500-square-metre BAC is the private initiative of former gallery owner Sandra Dagher and Lebanese artist Lamia Joreige, who've sought to provide Beirut with a reference centre for contemporary art.
As the Lebanese state has totally divested itself of any mandate to support culture, the BAC helps to sustain the local art scene. The centre does not have its own collection, but it does put on temporary exhibitions.
It also has concerts and theatre performances, but, above all, through its BAC design program, it tries to promote products conceived of and made by local designers.
