Bahnhofstrasse: the most expensive street in Europe

shopping

Whether for window-shopping or a full-out spree, Bahnhofstrasse is the place.

Zurich's main shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, offers more than a kilometre's worth of ways to lighten your wallet. Ready-to-wear shops gradually give way to major luxury brands on this long pedestrian street, which starts at the station and ends at the edge of the lake.

To regain your strength, stop in at the Confiserie Sprüngli for a coffee and a chance to sample their specialities: luxemburgerli (macaroons) and delicious truffles. Some prefer the rival chocolatier, Läderach, at number 106. Their bars, sold by weight, in original and subtle flavours (for example the pink pepper and strawberry), are exceptionally delicious.

At Christmas, Bahnhofstrasse is adorned with thousands of lights, giving the street an almost magical appearance.
