‘Artists in Their Time': a universal question

Published on 06-10-2016 Agenda

The concept of time and its relation to the artist and the work of art is at the heart of this exhibition, which is both erudite and existential.

Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, one of the most important novelists and essayists of Turkish literature and author of The Time Regulation Institute, placed the concept of time at the heart of his work. His words: ‘I am neither within time nor completely outside of it' served as a starting point for this vast, very existential exhibition that attempts to bring together the ties between the internal time of the artist and the external time of nature and society, or the very idea of ‘universal time'. Several artists from different periods and geographic zones are presented, while the visitor is invited to reflect on the place of art in time, the temporality of the works themselves, depending on the materials used, the different perceptions of an instant and a duration, and, of course, to wonder about identity, urban culture, feminism, and more. This is an exhibition that stands out for its intelligence and universal theme.
