An oasis of culture

museum quarter

Museumsquartier is the museum and gallery quarter, which may be visited for its architecture, but also for the masterpieces presented.

The old stables of the Habsburgs gave way to a set of museums, inaugurated in 2001, which embodies Viennese artistic creativity. Baroque and sometimes very bold contemporary architecture coexist in harmony.

Visit the largest collection in the world dedicated to the tormented Egon Schiele, as well as the paintings of the prolific Gustav Klimt at the Leopold Museum, where over 5,000 works are on display over five floors of this almost windowless white cube. The Mumok, a dark basalt building featuring art from the first half of the 20th century, contains more than 7,000 works. Its large windows offer a magnificent view over Vienna. One can also see the Museum of Architecture and the Kunsthalle, dedicated to international contemporary art. The whole neighbourhood shows cultural experiences that are among the most innovative, so soak it all in.

Take your time and do not hesitate to push open the door of a gallery, listen to an impromptu concert, or sit in one of the many neighbouring cafés and terraces.
