Altes Mädchen: an introduction to the world of hop growing

landmark

Both bistro and brasserie, this address is a must for all lovers of blond, brown, and white beer. It's also ideal for brunch by the fire or on the patio.

Where to start? Beer lovers won't know what to choose from the 60 beers on the menu, which come from all around the world with the exception of the Ratsherrn, brewed in the adjoining building. Altes Mädchen (‘old maid' in German) is known for its rigorous selection but it also offers soft drinks and Samova tea (‘Made in Hamburg'). As for the food, the focus is on local specialities and hamburgers designed by Patrick Rüther and Tim Mälzer (the local Jamie Oliver) from the nearby restaurant Bullerei.

The friendly room is warmed by a wood stove in winter, and the patio is lovely. Check out the Craft Beer Store (https://craftbeerstore.de), which offers a variety of beers to go, or grab a coffee in the Elbgold Kaffee (www.elbgold.com) which is also nearby.
