AFI Fest: cinema on a plate

Published on 07-12-2016 Agenda

Hollywood is not restricted to itself. With the Los Angeles International Film Festival, feature lengths and short films are kings, and general audience pretty much welcome.

The AFI Film Festival is the oldest of its kind in Hollywood, and a major stop on the road to the Academy Awards regarding short films. It is proof that the curators of the American Film Institute (AFI) know how to discover upcoming talents alongside the safe bets, and allow them to show their work in prestigious cinema theatres like the Dolby Theatre, the TCL Chinese Theatre or the Egyptian Theatre. And all screenings are free of charge!

Audience will award their best choice (it was Deniz Gamze Ergüven's Mustang last year), and so does the Jury with the New Auteur Grand Jury and the Grand Prix awards. Last year, Angelina Jolie's By the Sea opened the festival and tribute was paid to Charlotte Rampling for her entire career. The 29th edition will be up to the usual high standards, offering a selection of a hundred films (including about 50 shorts) for about forty countries.
